1 – No two days are the same
In recruitment, every day is different and you can be juggling a variety of campaigns all at different stages of the recruitment cycle. You have to be on the ball as you are dealing with new people, new roles and new deadlines and things constantly shift and change – this is why I love it because it’s exciting and never a dull moment!
2 – Networking – Recruitment is social
You speak to so many different people in recruitment – HR Managers, business owners, Directors and candidates from all different walks of life. I love to meet new people and hear their stories. Some clients and candidates have become close friends over the years. You certainly need to be a confident and passionate people’s person to be in this game and that’s why I love recruitment!
3 – Listening and learning – knowledge is key!
In recruitment you are dealing with different companies, constantly learning and understanding the needs of the business. I always find it fascinating talking to business managers about their working practices and cultures. It’s so important to build up a good relationship with your client by being professional, friendly, attentive and asking the right questions. And having a good knowledge of your industry is crucial when sourcing the right person for the right role.
4 – That lightbulb moment - finding the perfect match
Specialising in Rec 2 Rec which is a candidate led sector, I already have an established network of recruiters which are always floating around in my head. I love it when someone gives me a job and I already have someone in mind and I know it will be the perfect match! Sometimes I can have that lightbulb moment in the middle of the night! Knowing your market, your clients and your candidates is key to being a successful recruiter and when you get it right, it’s such a great feeling!
5 – Fee time!
It’s always a great feeling when you make a fee – I work for myself so generating a good income is essential for the running of my business. Good recruiters are target driven and competitive with a desire to win! But a lot of hard work and dedication is required before you succeed in this industry – if you don’t get it right then a fee can easily become a refund!
6 – Testing your resilience
Recruitment comes with it’s highs and lows – one week the job board can be inundated, along with a range of good candidates in the wings and some great fees. The next week business can be quiet, a candidate can change their mind after being offered a big juicy role or a probation period could be at stake. I am a very positive person and this industry definitely tests your resilience – as soon as you get knocked down, you need to get back up and move forward with a positive mind set and a commitment to success!
7 - Seeing people progress and succeed!
Working within the recruitment industry, I love to watch my successful candidates develop within their roles and careers. I have placed recruiters in their first resourcing role and seen them develop into branch managers and even business owners! Being a recruiter is so rewarding – you get to help and support companies and candidates along their career and staffing journeys whilst making great contacts and friends along the way.
Recruiters can get such a bad wrap, but personally, I think it’s a fantastic way to make a good and rewarding living.
